“The 1931 Dixie Series” SABR National Convention, Houston, TX, July 30-August 3, 2014

"The 1931 Dixie Series: Houston vs. Birmingham: The Brash Youngster Faces the Wily Veteran in a Series for the Ages" Friday, Houston, TX, July 30-August 3, 2014

The 1931 Houston Buffaloes (108-51) are considered one of the greatest teams in Minor League history.

They faced the Birmingham Barons in the Dixie Series, matching the winners of the Texas League and Southern Assn. The dramatic series went the full seven games. What added to the drama was the two future Hall of Famers on Houston, Texas League MVP Dizzy Dean and Ducky Joe Medwick. The larger-than-life Dean, a 26-game winner, met his match in a pitcher more than twice his age, Ray Caldwell.

Caldwell has starred for the New York Yankees back in the Teens, yet never achieved greatness because of losing battles with the bottle,

For the first time, Steve has a presentation from after the 1920s. Is he moving toward the Modern Era in his research?
